Message	happen to disagree. I've been in ACADEMIC science for over 15 years and have published in journals like Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, EMBO J. etc. etc. and have also contributed to many of millions of dollars of academic grants from the National Institutes of Health and Medical Research Council of Canada (CIHR). Most researchers these days are imported from 3rd world countries like India and China. They are treated like slave labour. I've worked in 5 major top ranked academic institutes. It is cut throat and bloody I assure you. I'm sorry to tell you that this is just the way it is. The principal investigators, typically being from North America are only concerned with there success. If people in the principal investigators lab are successful themselves, then they can take away work from the PI's lab and then start competing with them. Note that the MD system is completely the opposite, the mentor gains notoriety and pride when his trainee does well. This isn't a rant on my part. I've done very well as a PI, but I refuse to treat people that work for me with any less respect than I feel I should be treated. It's just the way it is........ Your points are well taken though.
